Histological section of the stomach stained with H&E. The left panel shows a low-magnification view of the stomach wall with distinct layers labeled: mucosa at the top, submucosa beneath it, muscularis externa with three layers (inner oblique, middle circular, and outer longitudinal), and serosa at the bottom. The myenteric plexus is indicated within the muscularis externa. A black box highlights a portion of the mucosa, which is shown in higher magnification in the right panel. In this magnified view, the surface mucous cells lining the lumen are visible, leading into gastric pits. Below the pits are mucous neck cells within the lamina propria. Deeper in the mucosa, parietal cells are present, followed by enteroendocrine cells and chief (zymogenic) cells. The muscularis mucosae forms the boundary at the base of the mucosa. The image illustrates the organization of gastric glands and epithelial cell types within the stomach mucosa.
