Diagram showing stages of erythropoiesis from a proerythroblast to a mature erythrocyte. The sequence begins with a large proerythroblast with a prominent nucleus, followed by a basophilic erythroblast with deeply stained cytoplasm. Next is a polychromatic erythroblast with mixed staining, then a normoblast (orthrochromatic erythroblast) with condensed nucleus. The nucleus is extruded as the cell becomes a reticulocyte, which later matures into an erythrocyte with a biconcave shape and no nucleus. The image illustrates progressive nuclear condensation and cytoplasmic changes during red blood cell development.
