Histological section of the ileum stained with H&E, showing the organization of the intestinal wall. The image displays prominent plicae circulares projecting into the lumen, lined by mucosa with intestinal villi and crypts. The mucosa contains enterocytes and enteroendocrine cells, highlighted in a magnified inset, along with anti-microbial secretory cells. Beneath the mucosa lies the submucosa, which includes aggregated lymphoid nodules (Peyer’s patches). The muscularis externa is composed of inner circular and outer longitudinal layers, and the outermost serosa is visible.
