From top to bottom: • Zone of reserve cartilage: Resting chondrocytes scattered in the matrix. • Zone of proliferation: Columns of flattened chondrocytes undergoing mitosis. • Zone of hypertrophy: Enlarged chondrocytes with clear cytoplasm. • Zone of calcification: Matrix becomes calcified, chondrocytes degenerate. • Zone of ossification: Bone tissue forms with invading blood vessels and marrow.
