Histological section of the gallbladder stained with H&E, showing the mucosa with tall folds lined by simple columnar epithelium bearing short apical microvilli. Beneath the epithelium lies the lamina propria, followed by the muscularis composed of smooth muscle fibers arranged irregularly. The outermost layer is adventitia or serosa depending on location. Insets highlight the epithelial lining with microvilli and the smooth muscle fibers. The image illustrates the layered structure of the gallbladder wall and its absorptive epithelium.
