Histological comparison of an elastic artery and a muscular artery stained with H&E. The elastic artery shows a thick tunica media composed of numerous elastic laminae interspersed with smooth muscle cells, with a thin tunica intima and tunica adventitia. The muscular artery displays a prominent tunica media of smooth muscle cells, an internal elastic lamina separating the intima from the media, and an external elastic lamina between the media and adventitia. Endothelium lines the lumen in both arteries. The image illustrates structural differences between elastic and muscular arteries.
