The cortex is divided into three zones: • Zona glomerulosa beneath the capsule, composed of rounded cells that secrete mineralocorticoids. • Zona fasciculata with spongiocytes arranged in cords, producing glucocorticoids. • Zona reticularis with smaller, darker cells that secrete androgens. The medulla contains sympathetic ganglion cells and chromaffin cells responsible for catecholamine secretion.
