Coloring Image
Histological images of the cervix stained with H&E. On the left if a low magnified view of the junction between the ectocervix (at the top) and the endocervix (at the bottom). The tissue is dense pink (acidophilic) and labelled as Cervical stroma (dense connective tissue). It contains several irregular holes near the junction which have been labelled as Mucinous retention cysts. Oblique long channels run in the top of the section, the ectocervix, which are labelled as cervical glands. An arrow points to the lumen (the space adjacent to the epithelial lining of the ectocervix and labelled as the External os. A small black box highlights the transition between endo- and ectocervix with a large arrow pointing to a magnified view of this junction. At the top of the magnified image is a label Endocervix (simple ciliated columnar epithelium). The image shows the epithelial transformation zone from the simple ciliated columnar epithelium of the endocervix to the stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium of the ectocervix. A line indicates the exact transition and labels it as the squamo-columnar junction. At the bottom of the magnified image is a label Ectocervix (stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium).
