The muscularis mucosae separates the mucosa from the submucosa, which contains the submucosal plexus. Beneath this, the muscularis externa consists of inner circular and outer longitudinal layers, and the outermost serosa is visible. A magnified inset highlights epithelial cells of the villus, including goblet cells, anti-microbial secretory cells, and enteroendocrine cells. The image illustrates adaptations for nutrient absorption and immune defense in the small intestine.
