Histological section of the duodenum stained with H&E, showing the layered structure of the intestinal wall. The mucosa contains villi lined by simple columnar epithelium with enterocytes and goblet cells, highlighted in a magnified inset that also shows the brush border. Intestinal crypts are visible at the base of the mucosa. The submucosa contains duodenal glands with mucous tubules, shown in a circular inset. Beneath the submucosa lies the muscularis externa and the outer serosa. The image illustrates adaptations for digestion and absorption in the duodenum.
