Histological section of the cochlea stained with H&E, showing the spiral organ of Corti and adjacent structures. The scala vestibuli, scala media, and scala tympani are labeled. The vestibular membrane separates the scala vestibuli from the scala media. Within the organ of Corti, inner and outer hair cells are visible along with inner and outer pillar cells and outer phalangeal cells. The tectorial membrane lies above the hair cells. Cochlear nerve fibers extend from the base of the organ. The inset highlights the stria vascularis in the lateral wall of the scala media, showing marginal, intermediate, and basal cells with associated capillaries. The image illustrates the structural organization of the cochlear sensory apparatus and supporting tissues.
