Adjacent to the endothelium is the glomerular basement membrane, followed by podocyte processes (pedicels) forming filtration slits bridged by diaphragms. The podocyte cell body is visible, adjacent to the glomerular space. The image illustrates the ultrastructure of the filtration barrier responsible for selective permeability in renal function.
